What Kind Of Personality Are You?

Your personality is a package in which your destiny is stored. Whether you are an extrovert, melancholic, task-orientated or a people person, there is something hidden in that personality that will fulfil you.

I have always loved psychometric and personality tests. These are tests that give you a glimpse into who you are, what you’re good at and what you naturally gravitate towards, among other things. I took my first one when I was working at McDonalds and I wasn’t enjoying it anymore. I had become a manager but I did not know why the joy had gone out of my job.

What I didn’t know was that my personality is such that I enjoy being in control of doing a high level of work technically which is fine while I’m working by myself. In contrast, in a managerial position when my success depends on others who may not care about the level of work, I suffer and become depressed. So after doing some strengths tests and the Myers-Briggs test for free online, I realised I needed a new job and to avoid managerial positions, at least for that time.

Some examples of personality and psychometric tests are the famous Myers-Briggs, the four humours/temperaments, colour profiles, introvert vs extrovert, strength tests, wealth dynamics and genius tests. The thing with all these is that they were never meant to be the definitive authority but a broad pointer. In my case I have taken all of the above at least because I find they measure different parts of your vast personality so each cover the blind spots of the others.

Why should you know your personality? Your personality is who you naturally are. Not what society has made you or what you think you should be. When you know who you really are, you know what you will enjoy doing. Doing something you enjoy with your one life is the best thing ever. You also know what you must not be doing because it depresses you. I’m sure if Barack Obama was stuck figuring out investment strategies like Warren Buffett it would bore him to no end.

  1. Your happiness is in your personality. Following your personality allows you get yourself into places and situations that are more likely to make you smile. The solace and control I feel when I enter my writing space alone and put on my Chance The Rapper and Kanye West music as I get ready to write articles positively gives me jitters. I look forward to going to this work everyday!
  2. Your life purpose can be hidden in your personality. Your destiny and life purpose I believe are packaged inside you and not outside where we all focus. One of the clues to your mission in life is in your natural inclinations and personality. What do you enjoy being alone with? How do you deal with stress? These are all steering points towards a greater calling for you. Even though Steve Jobs was a computer guy, he also felt a desire to check out sculpting classes in college. It was pulling him and later proved useful as he acquired an eye for design which was useful for Apple’s rise to product dominance. He didn’t ignore his personality.
  3. Money is also hidden in your personality. If you look at your personality as a clue to what you should be doing in life, then you have an opportunity to build your career around your personality traits. If you build your platform with your personality as a guide, you will not steer yourself wrong. Ben Shapiro, American Jewish political commentator is an awesome debater and consistently wipes the floor with his opponents. This is partly due to the fact that he has an almost autistic personality which when directed at a pursuit makes him a genius. He makes a lot of money debating and answering questions.
