I would argue that the travel industry is one industry dominated by loyalty. Loyalty programs exist for this exact reason and is a massive driver for many customers, which helps maintain a loyal customer base despite cheaper alternatives. Frequent travelers will choose a hotel brand, an airline brand, and a rental car brand and maintain these relationships despite cheaper alternatives only because being a frequent customer awards you with privileges that are lost if you decide to switch.
Call it coerced loyalty, but these programs exist and are very effective. Perhaps this will be a tactic Uber and other companies will need to employ in the future to create a loyal base.
