Thanks for this write up Ryan. My understanding, also as a freelancer myself, is that there is a different in classification between digital goods that are “off-the-shelf” like a game, SaaS, or downloadable software and actual freelance work where you are writing custom code, modifying an off the shelf product, or doing custom design.
This makes it fun when you’re trying to account, in accounting system, different streams of revenue.
That said, most true freelancers (i.e. work for hire) are doing service and won’t need to collect sales tax.
