What are landmarks

Landmarks are key components of the way we organize our knowledge of global, regional, and local environments.Our knowledge of the world is usually described as our “cognitive map.” Landmarks are used in a variety of ways including: use as organizing features to “anchor” segments of space; use as location identifiers, as to help decide what part of a city or region one is in; and use as choice points, or places where changes in direction are needed when following a route.

Introductory Questions

  • Ask the class the question “ What are landmarks ?”
    Evaluate how much the children know of the concept without any material provided to them.
  • Ask the class to find out landmarks from ordinary buildings in ex 1.1?
    Evaluate the winning option and explain the context of table mountain from the wikipedia reading material.
  • Ask the class their choice of landmark in ex 1.2 ?
    Evaluate the winning option and explain the context of table mountain from the wikipedia reading material. Please draw a map on board or use the provided map to illustrate the need of table mountain landmark
  • Ask the class to draw a map of the directions from the school to their house and identify the landmarks
    Collect the drawings and the description. Appreciate creative, non conventional and skilled answers. use the map reference drawing if the children have problem

Planning for field trip(day 2)

  • Divide the class into 5 groups for specific data gathering on History, Design, Social Influence, Mapping, Images and media
    Ask the specific groups to collect data for their topic on all occasion of the field trip.
  • Read wikipedia articles for India Gate and Arc de Triomphe
    helps children in a basic understanding of formatted data for similar landmarks

Day 2: Field Visit

Goals for the day:

  • Analysis of Utsav chow as a landmark
    infer survey and categorize information about utsav Chowk
  • Synthesis of data for utsav chowk
    compose create and organize the data collected in a format acceptable by wikipedia

Cidco Office

Architect, Contracting officer, Maintenance team
Ask the specific groups to collect data for their topic on all occasion of the field trip. The other two teams assist them in note taking and recording the session.

Utsav Chowk

  • Map out Utsav chowk area and census of amenities present there (sample map added in resources)
  • Interview people about the importance of the landmark
  • Survey the issues associated with the monument
  • Survey about the events that have happened

People gathered around the chowk
Enquire about social habit of people around utsav chowk, frequency of visit and emotional attachment

Maintenance officers
problems associated with maintenance, changes over time to the place, events that take place

Shop owners and hawkers
Food habits, hygiene standards, government regulations, Location and timing


Day 3: Analysis & Compilation

Goals for the day:

  • Comparison of utsav chowk with other similar landmarks
    infer survey and categorize information about utsav Chowk
  • Evaluation for the final edits and submission to wikipedia article
    compose create and organize the data collected in a format acceptable by wikipedia

Request children to acquaint themselves with wikipedia editor mode for some time and start inputting their group data in the stub available online.

Peer review from opposite groups

  • Request children to suggest edits to work of different groups for example citations, sources captions etc.
