Life is not just about being Happy

and it is okay to have other emotions too.

Ever since childhood we hear a million voices that say — life is all about being happy. But I think it is a big lie. Or maybe we all just mistook it.

I’m 27 years old now and I’ve learnt that life is not just about happiness, rather it is filled with so many other emotions. Happiness is a one word substitute for so many emotions like success, love, enjoyment, excitement and many other emotions that make us feel good. But unfortunately, it is impossible to have these emotions all the time in our life.

This really struck me many times and one specific moment was when I was consoling a friend who was a little depressed. I was shooting out the popular consoling phrases like — ‘Don’t worry and everything’s gonna be alright. Just be happy. You must be happy’ and she literally got fed up with the words and said ‘I don’t want to be happy. It’s always happy, happy and happy. I really don’t want to!’

I then realised ‘people might be going through many things that we might never know’ and it is not that easy to ‘become happy’ in a moment or so.

It is okay to have ‘unhappy’ times

The truth is life is not just about being happy and it is normal to have other emotions too.

It’s okay to be sad

It’s okay to cry

It’s okay to have literally no emotions

It’s okay to to be sad for no reason

It’s okay to feel lonely

It’s okay to have failures

It’s okay when nobody listens to you

It’s okay to be ‘not happy’

That is how life is. Even when you feel like you’re in vacuum, just hold on and things will change gradually. Try to make it better! After all, not everything is in your hands, just cool down and take it slowly.

How can you experience happiness?

Happiness is just a part of your life and the bigger part is all about experiences. This whole life is a long journey yet small where we are free to explore and experience everything — good and bad, success and failures, joy and sorrow and many more.

We must accept bad times as much as we accept the good times. Once we try to understand everything is part of this bigger picture called ‘life’, we can overcome all the odds in the best way.

The next time when someone says ‘Life is all about being happy’ just understand, it is not completely about being happy from birth till death.

We must try to be happy at every moment we can and live the moment. If there’s something that makes you sad, hold on, things are gonna change soon. Everything is temporary here, you, me and every other soul.

Accept things, just hold on and keep moving!
