Human Rights Watch has issued a pressing appeal to the Malaysian government, calling for a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the recent kidnapping of Thuzar Maung, a prominent advocate for Myanmar refugees, and her family. The incident, which occurred on July 4, 2023, has raised grave concerns about the safety and well-being of the abducted individuals. Thuzar Maung is a dedicated proponent of democracy and human rights in Myanmar, underscoring the urgent need for the Malaysian government to locate the family and ensure their immediate security.

Thuzar Maung, along with her husband Saw Than Tin Win, their daughter Poeh Khing Maung, and their sons Aung Myint Maung and Thukha Maung, were forcibly taken from their residence in Ampang Jaya, Kuala Lumpur, according to eyewitness accounts and CCTV evidence. The abductors masqueraded as police officials, gaining access to the heavily guarded neighborhood. Shortly after their arrival, the family’s phones were switched off, and identical vehicles were observed leaving the compound later that evening.

The abduction of Thuzar Maung and her family has raised serious concerns about their safety and well-being. Thuzar Maung’s vocal advocacy for democracy and human rights in Myanmar has likely made her a potential target. It is crucial for the Malaysian government to promptly and thoroughly investigate this incident to determine the family’s whereabouts and secure their immediate release.

Human Rights Watch, alongside concerned individuals and organizations worldwide, calls on the Malaysian government to prioritize a transparent and comprehensive investigation into the kidnapping. It is essential for law enforcement agencies to exhaust all avenues in uncovering the truth behind this distressing event. The responsible authorities must demonstrate a strong commitment to upholding justice and safeguarding the rights of Thuzar Maung and her family.

This abduction serves as a poignant reminder of the risks faced by human rights defenders globally. Governments, international organizations, and civil society must unite in providing support, protection, and solidarity to those individuals who fearlessly champion human rights and democracy. It is crucial to create an environment where human rights defenders can carry out their essential work without fear of reprisals or harm.
