There have been a lot of articles showing the lack of women in the technology industry. In the data science industry, this is especially true. In this blog, we’re going to take a look at 10 women in data science you should know about.

1. Data Scientist at SpaceX: Julie Yoo

Julie Yoo is a data scientist at Space X. She is currently supporting Space X’s efforts to make space travel safer. She is also working with the development team to improve the efficiency of the engine. Before joining Space X, she designed predictive models to support the health care cost savings for her previous employer, Pfizer. Julie received her BS in Mathematics and Computer Science from Florida Atlantic University. She’s also a graduate of the University of Washington’s Master of Data Science program. She was nominated for the Rising Star award by the Women in Machine Learning and Data Mining (WiML) group at the University of Washington.

Yoo is a former NASA scientist and is now a data scientist at SpaceX, and she shared her experience with us and why she decided to work for SpaceX.”

2. Data Scientist at Dataiku: Caroline Aniel

Caroline Aniel, founder of Dataiku.io, is a data scientist and startup founder. She was the first female engineer at both Facebook and LinkedIn. Caroline is a world-class data scientist. She has built several successful companies and organizations. Caroline is the founder of Dataiku.io, a company that makes it easy for data scientists to do their job. They are the winners of the 2016 Datawars. The company is based in Paris, France. Caroline is also an advisor for Dataiku.io.

Caroline Aniel is a Data Scientist at Dataiku, a data science software company that uses machine learning to build predictive models. She has a PhD in Computation Neuroscience from the University of Geneva, where she studied how the brain controls voluntary movement. Today, she is using her expertise to build predictive models to analyze the drivers of success of startups, and to improve the process of recruiting participants for clinical trials.

3. Head of DevOps at Dataiku: Romain Gaucher

Romain Gaucher is Head of DevOps at Dataiku. Romain is passionate about DevOps, Microservices, Docker, Kubernetes, Automated Testing, Continuous Integration, Continuous Delivery, DevSecOps, OSS, ITIL, Agile, Lean Startup. He works on the strategy and the roadmap of Dataiku’s DevOps products, and coordinates the DevOps team.

4. Director of Data Science at Alibaba: Kavita Gupta

Kavita Gupta is the director of Data Science at Alibaba — the Chinese e-commerce giant. Gupta and her team of data scientists and engineers work with a variety of Alibaba products and services. She is also the co-founder of Curofy — a healthcare platform that helps people find doctors and book appointments online. It is that experience that helped her land the role of director of data science at Alibaba. Gupta is a computer science graduate from Columbia University and has a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan. She has worked at Microsoft and Apple, and was Google’s first data scientist outside of its core search business.

5. Data Scientist at Facebook: Janette Braeuer

Janette Braeuer is a data scientist at Facebook. Her job is to help build the product experience strategy for the News Feed. She started out as a software engineer and product manager, and she’s worked on the News Feed since the beginning. She thinks about how people’s behaviors on Facebook affects their social relationships, and how those changes impact people’s experience on the platform.

6. Meg Anania: From aspiring mathematician to PHD in Data Science

Meg Anania has been a member of the Data Science team at Twitter since 2011. Prior to that, she was a Senior Research Associate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Research Scientist at IBM Research. Her current projects at Twitter include using social media data to study political and economic events worldwide and improving the targeting of Twitter Ads. Out of all the people we’ve talked to so far, Meg has the most experience working with large data sets. She’s worked on a lot of different projects and has a bunch of experience working with massive data sets.

7. Dr. Lisa Charlotte Rost: Using Data to Fight Smarter

Dr. Lisa Charlotte Rost is a data scientist and the founder and managing director of Data Science Retreats (DSR), a company that designs and delivers data science training and consulting programs to help companies transform their businesses through data-driven insights. DSR was founded in 2017 and over the past year Lisa has helped dozens of organizations make data-driven decisions. She is passionate about helping people connect with and learn from one another and has facilitated and led conferences and workshops since the early 2000s. Lisa holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science and a Master’s in Quantitative Finance from the University of California, Los Angeles. She has also taught data science and programming at Stanford University and has worked in industries ranging from healthcare to Wall Street.

8. Dr. Nafissa Sadat: A female data scientist and a great mentor

Nafissa Sadat is a female data scientist and a great mentor. She is the founder of Aneko Data Solutions , a company that offers valuable consulting services when it comes to data science and data engineering. Using her skills and experience, she is also a mentor at Women Who Code , an NYC based non-profit organization made up of women and men who work in the tech industry. She is a great example of a professional who has used her skills and education to make a valuable contribution to the technology industry and help other women do the same.

9. Dr. Mary Maller: The first female data scientist at Netflix!

Dr. Mary Maller is a data scientist at Netflix. She specializes in data mining, machine learning, and big data. She earned a PhD in Statistics from Harvard University and a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. She also has a B.A. in Economics. She was recently a postdoc at the University of Washington in Seattle and a visiting lecturer in the Department of Statistics at Harvard University. She is a co-author of a book on Bayesian Methods for Hackers. She is a co-founder of the Women in Machine Learning Workshop, a student-run workshop at the annual KDD conference.

10. Dr. Gabriella Harari: A female data scientist and a great mentor

Dr. Gabriella Harari, Ph.D. is an expert in machine learning and has over 15 years of experience in the field. She is the author of the book “Data Science For Business: What you need to know about data mining and data-analytic thinking” and is the Chief Data Scientist at BeyondCore (a company that provides solutions for time series analysis). She also taught a course on data science at the University of Washington. She’s a great role model for women in the field of data science. She is the author of the book “Data Science For Business: What you need to know about data mining and data-analytic thinking”.

The lack of women in the field is a serious issue, but it’s also a misconception that women aren’t successful in the field.
