Sommelier Slam Poetry — Turning Tasting Notes Into An Art Form

Every week the Entertaining World of Wine celebrates Wine Wednesday with a new edition of Somm Slam. As a sommelier and slam poet, turning tasting notes into an art form was inevitable.

Creating fun and entertaining ways to promote great winemakers around the world, while providing wine lovers with a unique opportunity to learn and appreciate more about the world of wine is our goal. Let us know if we’re successful!

This week we’re celebrating a cool climate Pinot Gris from 40 Knots Vineyard & Estate Winery located on Vancouver Island on the West Coast of Canada. A well aged and refined Tempranillo from the Valdepeñas region of Spain and a racy little Rosato/Rosé from Italy’s Tuscany region.

Pinot Gris Slam
Oh there’s a full bootied Pinot Gris
I mean full bodied…or do I
For I can’t deny the way the colour moves side to side
Doesn’t catch my breath and draw my eye
Like a moth to a flame
I’m drawn by this richly textured bouquet
On display for all the world to taste and see
Oh you saucy little minx…40 Knots Pinot Gris

Tempranillo Slam
Black cherry, leather, tobacco leaves and spice
Johnny Depp or Tempranillo
It’s just a roll of the dice
Close your eyes open your mind
Taste the Rioja heat steeped in ancient vines
This is the pirate’s go-to wine
When all the rum is gone
Anciano, Valdepeñas

Rosato Slam
Gabbiano Rosato
From the heart of Tuscany
Comes to me
Sangiovese whispers sweet nothings
That amount to something
Intensely brilliant
Lightly bold
Truth be told
In the absence of friends
I have this friend to hold
