Kotagede is an old city in Yogyakarta Regional . There are many interesting things about the Kotagede, but here I want to talk about the old buildings and culinary in Kotagede. Such as the old building in the Masjid Gedhe of the Islamic Mataram Kingdom.

As the former capital of the Islamic Mataram kingdom during the Panembahan Senopati administration, Kotagede leaves many archaeological. One of that is the old building of Masjid kotagede. The temple have been builded since 15th century.

The process of building the Kotagede Mataram Gedhe Mosque at that time was assisted by many Hindus who meet Ki Ageng Pamanahan, Panembahan Senopati’s father. At that time, he was moving to the Mentaok Forest. At that time, Ki Ageng Pamanahan moved from Pajang to Mataram via Prambanan and meet ethnic Hindus. The construction of the mosque was then assisted by many Hindus. One that is very visible is the entrance of the Gedhe Mataram Kotagede Mosque in the form of a temple.

And another interesting thing from the Kotagede is about the delicious cake we can find a legendary cake there. The first kipo was made by Mbah Mangun Irono. At that time around 1946, Mbah Mangun was selling in front of the house with the help of his son, Djito Suharjo. The name kipo is actually an acronym for the question ‘iki opo’. According to Dra. Rahayu’s wife, the owner of Kipo Bu Djito, the name came out of nowhere, because Mbah Mangun did not even know the name of the snack he made.

Kipo is a snack from the ancient Mataram heritage. Thats why the location of manufacture is in Kotagede which is still in the same area as Ancient Mataram. Kipo is made from simple ingredients, such as glutinous rice flour, grated coconut, and palm sugar. For coloring, they use katu leaves or suji leaves. Kipo cake is baked over low heat and each pack has 5 pieces of cake in it. The tastes is sweet and has roasted coconut in it, this cake so yummy and the price so cheap just Rp2500 . This cake is suitable to be eaten with hot tea and can be eaten by all ages, both children and adults.
