Gender Stereotype in Technology: Break the Barriers!

In my community, Girls in Tech Indonesia held GIT Your Code On, a coding bootcamp for empowering women in technology

Global Citizenship Education (GCED) aims to create equal opportunity for all, regardless of status, inclusion, and gender to access any opportunities, even in learning and working field. Technology, the industry who rapidly changing, gender inequality is quietly alive. There has been a perception that women are not suitable for technology-based roles.

In Indonesia, the level of interest in technology sector is very high. Although the demand is high, it’s still a very small amount of women contribute to this field. Lack of interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) become one of the reasons for it. No confidence and can’t find role models also make women feel that a technology career is not for them.

Refreshingly, the winds of change might be blowing now. Because of Industry 4.0, the growth of tech company in Indonesia is growing so fast. Many startups showing potential growth and becoming a successful company not only in Indonesia but also in Southeast Asia, even in Asia. Many women in Indonesia showing interest in technology, and start to choose the career path in this field.

So, why not to break the barriers? As long as showing a strong “growth mindset, a “willingness to try new things,” and appropriate training or experience women can do and make great innovation in this industry.
