My ongoing journey in becoming a Data Scientist

As it is said, the destination is not as significant as the journey, so, is my current adventure in becoming a data scientist. Since childhood, I was fascinated with computers. This includes both hardware and software aspects when dealing with it.

Well, the first computer, my father, had bought for me, was a second-hand Windows 95 back in 2000. But not until, almost a decade later that I had found out that mathematics and programming go hand in hand, during my first year of engineering at MANIT, Bhopal (India). I was fortunate enough to learn about C programming during my first semester of engineering in 2009.

Five years later, in 2014, for my master’s degree at Sheffield Hallam Univerity, United Kingdom, I learned about Visual Basic for Excel and created an application. The application that I build using Visual Basic in Excel was called Slab Pavement Estimator. The user interface was designed to accept details about different project details like, for example, the location, the cost of the project, the labor required for the project, etc. The project was how the main contractor would gain details about different sub-contractors in lying tiles for landscaping projects. This was further strengthened with graphs that gave a visual representation of the various projects. (If anyone wants to create similar applications you can contact me via my email address or my WhatsApp number)

Little did I know that all programming languages have similar traits. It was, at that time, I realized that all programming languages follow the same logic. That is, every program that’s being programmed has only one goal, which is to achieve a single desired output, even if it is basic arithmetic calculations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division.

This brings us to the present day, I had joined for Machine Learning course via Coursera offered by Stanford University in 2019. The tutor was Andrew Ng. His classes were amazing. But something I learned was, I had to brush up my concepts in mathematics, statistics. So, I decided to start from the basics. I did the initial research like what is machine learning or what is data science or what mathematical skills will I require to achieve my goal in becoming a data scientist or what programming languages should I learn, like R or Python. That led me to a website called DataCamp, and I enrolled for a career path — that’s Data Scientist with Python. I could have joined for the Data Scientist with R career path, but I weighed out the pros and cons of learning Python and R, but I chose Python over R because Python had readable syntax.

Will be continued…….
