Insa(a)ne

With whatever has been happening in Haryana in the past few days, I had to put it out in writing about what I felt and saw during this time.

Unless you’re from outside of India, or living under a rock, you probably heard about the riots that took place in Panchkula and other parts of Punjab, Haryana and Delhi. Why is it that the same people who demand justice for crimes against women otherwise, go insane when the accused is a self styled saint, with so many followers? Why is it that the blind faith of so many people makes them believe the most ridiculous things.

This isn’t the first time people have gone on rampage for these thugs, but what I fail to understand is why? Back in November 2014, there was the news of Sant. Rampal where he held thousands of people hostage and converted his ashram into a fortress. The result was a seige that lasted for days.

My best guess is that most of these blind followers go meet these babas for their blessings, and attribute any success they got through sheer hardwork is attributed to them, this in turn creates a cycle of belief that as long as they have his blessings they will be successful.

Even if this is the case, what right do these people have to burn and destroy public property when the law of the land declares them a criminal. What benefit did those people who were arrested, injured, or shot at get from going on a rampage against the state machinery.

On friday, most of Punjab and Haryana and parts of Delhi were held hostage to their hooliganism. Even today two states have shut down completely and an advisory is issued for other places where a conflict can happen. Is this the new norm? Is this the new India we have been talking about? Are we going to go on a rampage everytime, just because a baba is convicted for some crime? Is this the new norm or pure Insanity?
