Oppenheimer has crossed the $500 million threshold, becoming Nolan’s highest grossing film since Dunkirk which made $527 million pre-pandemic. The Cillian Murphy starrer has defeated the total collection of the 2017 WWII film with $552 million worldwide and has already overtaken Tenet’s $363 million global haul. This means that the movie has already made a profit since the breakeven point was estimated to be around $400 million.

The movie had an $82 million opening weekend, the highest opening ever in Nolan’s career outside of the Dark Knight Trilogy. After a phenomenal 44% drop in the second weekend, the movie crossed the $400 million mark.

The Nolan directed biopic has made $228 million in the North American market and $324 million in the overseas market. The highest grossing international markets are the UK, India, UAE, Germany, France and Australia.

The film faces heavy competition from the Margie Robbie led Barbie which has crossed the $800 million mark in its second weekend with a similar drop of 43%. It is yet to be seen whether Barbie will reach the total of The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

A $600-$700 million global haul for Oppenheimer is within the realm of possibility. This will give Nolan the rare distinction of being one of the last original filmmakers to regularly cross the $500 million mark.

Meanwhile, Oppenheimer does not have a release date in Japan yet, which is ridiculous considering the fact that Nolan never shows Hiroshima and its population in the film. Nevertheless, Oppenheimer has crossed the half-billion dollar mark and is on its way to reach $600 million, feats that hardly need Japan to boost the box office.
