Downloading Snapchat stories with the new Memories feature.

In case you missed it, Snapchat rolled out a new section in the app called Memories. They said they’re rolling it out slowly over the next month or so but it seems like a large group of people got it this weekend (myself included).

The TLDR version of the new features: you can save all the snaps you ever wanted right inside the app itself.

So what?

Thanks to this feature, Snap has enabled users to reuse snaps from their Memories section AND has allowed users to upload photos from their camera roll to their stories. Hello game changer for brands! No more awkwardly taking snaps of other devices or hand drawn content! You can create graphics in advance, share user-submitted content, and more right to your story. Hallelujah! Note: It does show up differently than a natively-created snap. It does allow some editing (same text, drawing, stickers, and certain filters options) but does not allow rotating or cropping images.

As you can see, the image doesn’t fill the screen as a natively-created snap does. It also lets you know when the photo was really from and where it was uploaded from.
Sad day. Snap will never see this lovely horizontal show of my dog, Fern. #FernsAdventures

Saying I’m pumped for this feature would be putting it lightly but that’s for another time. I’ll report back once we’ve had the opportunity to test the waters there.

As we look at all the great ways to explore this new feature, I wanted to check in with some of the features and how this update will change them.

I save my snap stories professionally and personally. I love saving the videos for future reference of my adventures so Memories works pretty well in that regard. It doesn’t clutter my phone but it keeps everything nice and neat in one place for me to revisit. Ohhh yeah, Snapchat. Good job!

For the brand I manage though, I save stories for an entirely different reason. We snap events, clubs, gatherings, etc. from all around campus. We’re currently focusing on our prospective audiences during the summer months but also use it to connect with current students during busier times of the year. For anyone who’s using Snapchat (personally or professionally) you know a story can be quite the creation at the end. It’s horribly sad to think of it disappearing at the end of 24 hours with nothing to show. What we’ve been doing, along with many other brands, is re-purposing stories into YouTube videos, blog posts, snippets for larger video projects, etc. Not only do we keep an archive of what we’re doing, we’re also making the content more accessible to audiences who aren’t on Snapchat.

The ability to download stories is still there within Snapchat but it is a little hidden. I wanted to take a few seconds to show you where they’re tucked away so you won’t spend as much time looking for it as someone who will remain anonymous (okay, it’s me) did. I may or may not have paid attention to Snapchat’s demo snap they sent when they rolled the feature out to my account. Oops.

The change comes from where you actually download the story from. With the addition of Memories there’s a few new steps.

Stories are located in the same place. Bottom right hand corner.

Not much as changed here, as you can see.

CHANGE ALERT. CHANGE ALERT. This will ask you ONLY if you want to save it to your Memories. There is no option to download to camera roll from here.

Now go back to where you take the snap and go to the new Memories section. As you can see it’s located below the shutter button.

Once you’re in Memories, you’ll be able to see all the posts you’ve saved. We’ve only saved the one from yesterday. You CAN save individual parts of story to this section. So if you only wanted to download one part of the story, this process would be pretty much the same except for clicking the specific snap in the story and saving it to Memories. Also, you can send each snap to Memories right from the get-go.

Hold down on the screen until a frame appears around the image and the menu bar shows up at the top of your screen.

And voila! Export and your story is now in your camera roll!

Hopefully this saves you a few moments of searching or at least a glimpse into the new Snapchat if you haven’t gotten a chance to check it out! As always check me out on Tweeter.
