Your descriptions of the careless use of human consciousness are painfully true. But I think you miss the larger point in that human consciousness does not exist independently as a trait or a skill, it is shaped by our larger economic, cultural and religious stories and, at the same time, responsive to changing needs of emotional and physical survival. So, while it is possible for a few exceptional people to feel and manage their direct participation with life forces via their awareness or consciousness, most folks need more guardrails, direction, and support.
Eventually a theory of mind will evolve with a more complex understanding of human consciousness as embedded in the natural cycles and will evoke wisdom to guide our participation in life in more authentic ways. Then your question will be unecessary. When might that be? My guess is that the year 2050 will be interesting.
