Flooding in Houston

Earlier this afternoon I was surfing the internet and saw many images of the flooding in Texas due to Hurricane Harvey. The image that is burned into my mind is one of several elderly people, from a nursing facility, who are up to their waists in floodwaters — water infested with bacteria, insects, and who knows what else, perhaps alligators? These people appeared to be reading, knitting, or just sitting there waiting and pondering what was to happen next. Tis image brought tears to my eyes. Why weren’t these people evacuated first? Why do they need to be suffering the disgrace of being stuck in this polluted water? Do we as a Society have no compassion for the elderly? Does our Government consider these people collateral damage? Do the people of Texas not care whether these individuals live or die? I realize that some may have uprooted trees and debris in their yards. I realize that others may have damage to their homes — roofs torn away by winds. If not injured, the younger people are sure to survive. I cannot say the same for the elderly that have been left behind.
