Bernard Tshumi

Bernard Tshumi (Jan 25,1944)

Burnard Tschumi is an architect from Switzerland and educator commonly associated with deconstructism. Deconstructism is a movement of postmodern architecture which appeared in the 1980s which gives the impression of the fragmentation of the constructed building. Beside Tschumi, Zaha hadid and Frank Gehry are also deconstuctists.

He’s an architect that proves that architect is not just about space and form but also about event action and what happens in space. (Y-Jean Mum-Reisellie, 2015) One of his famous technique is envolved from montage techniques taken from film and techniques of the novea roman.

To begin this project, the work chosen for inspiration is The street, 1976 from The Manhattan Transcripts.

The aim for this assignment is to draw an indoor pool complex.

For movement three student’s movement through city has recorded and transcribed on a paper. Based on three different movements one average motion of three has been selected then as shown in ‘Figure C’ and ‘E’ the space is reverse traced. Focusing on movement and dynamics (Figure D) started giving the space outlined the direction to make path ways then contoured empty spaces. ‘Figure H’ shows the whole shapes of the building the color red is to show the movement transfer from left to right. The movement found in human body energy transition.

As one of Tschumi’s techniques ‘The color began with a drawing, as a coding to distinguish an intensity of events…, It was at that moment that I decided to use color red to give a strong identity to the park.So the color became a visual device, a way to ensure that there would always be an activator.’ (Tschumi, 1984)

As Tshumi describes his thoughts about red, I found the importance of the space evaluate against sensory orientation, increased in me with the color red.

For my design I have used minimum amount to highlight the point where energy of the body shifted.‘at a conceptual level randomness can be better applied to events, actions, and programs than to physical form itself. So at La Villette the system of physicalforms is there to allow the random- the event- to take place.’ (Tschumi, 1984)Through developing, It had really exposed randomness by having no limitation, creating spaces then reversing the created space.

Overall as Tschumi’s first and main rule for his designs, the architect isn’t just space but is about what is happening within the space. My focus was to create a pool that people could interact with and in. Moving through the structure was considered as drawing. The connection between separated buildings were also considered,

So as results, it is multiple buildings that’s coordinating with each other that movement is consistently affecting to each other.
