Life in the city

THE LIFE IN THE CITY

Chosen artist for this assignment is a Dutch photographer Iwan Baan.

During the lecture in the week 2, we’ve learnt that Iwan Baan is a photographer that specialized in contemporary buildings that host a series of hyper-contemporary activities and subjects.

Things that inspired me about his artwork was that his techniques that I found in his work matched with my design principles, which is Balance.

Balance is a basic principle of art, the definition of balance refers to the ways in which the elements (lines, shapes, colors, textures, etc.) of a piece are arranged. And that is what I think most important in design, especially in photography. And when I saw his work I could see that a lot of his photos was put the main objects in the middle -the big building, shaped windows, and they are all in lines.

As Ching (2014) says there is a complementarity between figure and ground, took that into consideration that not just an object but also the background works with the object as complementarity.

For Baan, he always finds the best and unique angle to present the building’s shapes and its character at the very best angle that could contain most of its features.

For my photos there were two key words, one, balance and the second was on the best angle.

The photographer tells through his photos the city’s high-end designs, clean and perfectness.
