A Glass of Water is all it takes!
Ideation and Prototyping Process Blog -Week 3- 50 shades
This week’s assignment made me excited; thinking about the possible objects of which I can draw 50 renderings. I thought about showing ‘water’ in different forms but wanted to contain it in a physical object in which a glass served to be the best. I wanted to choose a simple object that we see every day and don't notice much. Initially made some rough sketches using pencil, gel pen, and ballpoint pen. I chose a glass of water and was thinking about all the angles, lighting, mediums, forms, and representation of a glass of water.
Below are my initial brainstorming on the forms of water and my decision to choose a physical object (ie) glass of water.

Below is the glass of water as my reference object and the following are the sketches on 170 gsm paper.

Tried out hatching, crosshatching, and stippling and explored different pencils and pens for sketching them.

Different pens had different pressure points and outcomes which I noticed while drawing. Shading using a 2HB pencil was difficult and switched different pencils while shading and noticed that the etching on the glass gave different shades and colors. Focused more on the rim of the glass and the still water edge sometimes.
Later switched to a digital mode and used Adobe fresco for the rest of the sketches.

Wanted to show the effect of light on water and glass. clicked some pictures while the light is at different spots and used it as a reference to sketch.

Took a look over another glass of water and quickly sketched some angles.

Placed the glass of water near the window and observed the change in color and reflection with and without water.

Some more styles that I wanted to explore drawing like digital watercolor, dry chalk, crayon, marker, oil paint, and other mixed media. Thought about the glass of water while it is hot, spilled, filled, and cold and did some sketches.

Final sketches wanted to explore the style of art and representation of a glass of water in the different mediums as seen above.
Overall, I have learned more on to focus and observe the object that generally we tend to miss out on. Found out even the tiniest objects have great detail to them. Observing an object for a long time made me notice the change in lighting, color and capture the beauty of change over time. The next steps would be to try out the object in 3d and other 2d mediums and software.
