Now’s a great time to drop into Verdansk

Note: If you want to learn more about the battle royale genre in general, check out my earlier article on the topic.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare entered Season 5 on August 5th. The new season provided fans with Warzone map changes, new guns, and multiplayer maps. If you haven’t played Warzone before, you can access it for free on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, or PC.

Something I have noticed in Season 5 of Warzone is that Activision has borrowed from their rival Fortnite when it comes to map changes. Attracting players to a location was something Fortnite excelled in. For example, the center of the map contained a POI that was once called “Dusty Depot” in 2017. However, the name was changed to “Dusty Divot” at a later season. While maintaining the same atmosphere of the original Dusty Depot, it had a certain freshness. In Warzone, the stadium was fully enclosed for the first four seasons. However, for the first time — the stadium is now open and can be fully explored. The change to a POI causes many people to land at that location for at least a few weeks. …

A 15 year-old-game, but still a masterpiece

The first video game console I ever played on was the PlayStation 2. I played a variety of games such as ATV Offroad Fury, Finding Nemo, and CoD: Finest Hour. The one that stood out to me the most was The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. Not only was this my first action-adventure game, but it was also my first open-world game. I never really cared about the story; I spent most of my time smashing helicopters and jumping around through the city.

I didn’t play the game when it first released, but approximately five years later in 2010. It still was one of the best games at the time due to its mechanics, graphics, and fighting system. The graphics were way ahead of its time, so I didn’t feel like playing a five-year-old game in 2010. On my PS2, I never had a storage card, so I started from the beginning of the game every time playing it. This, surprisingly, never bored me of the game. I eventually completed the game by not turning off the console after playing the game for two years. …

Playing as a Templar was great fun— one more time please Ubisoft?

One of the most overlooked game in the Assassin’s Creed series, Assassin’s Creed Rogue, had a complicated, unique story. It was the last game in the franchise to be released on last-gen consoles; AC Rogue released around the same time as Assassin’s Creed Unity (which was released on modern generation consoles only). Even though AC Rogue was remastered later in 2018 and 2019 for many gaming consoles and PC, it never received the attention it deserved.

It is still the only game in the franchise, where you play as a protagonist that is a Templar. In all other games, you play as an Assassin who has to get revenge for the killing of a family member, ethical reasons, or for wealth. The antagonists for these games are the Templars or the modern-day, Abstergo Industries. AC Rogue, however, decides to let you play as Shay Patrick Cormac, an Assassin turned Templar. After seeing the faults of the Creed due to the massive disaster caused at Lisbon, Portugal, Shay goes “rogue” and starts hunting old Assassin friends. …

A brief glance at Ubisoft’s upcoming battle royale challenger

If you are new to the battle royale genre, you may want to read my beginner’s guide before proceeding.

Ubisoft Montreal, creators of the highly acclaimed Assassin’s Creed Origins, have decided to jump into the battle royale genre with their futuristic, urban battle royale game — Hyper Scape. Instead of a traditional battle royale map with large rural areas and towns scattered about, the game provides an urban map with many large buildings and structures. For example, the Notre Dame cathedral is present within the game; it can be entirely scaled. Hyper Scape takes mobility and parkour to another level.

Hyper Scape is supposed to launch on PS4, Xbox One, and PC as a free-to-play game. The game is intended to launch on PC first in a few weeks, and then be available to play on a console near the holiday season. You can sign up for the beta on the Ubisoft website for a chance to play starting today, June 3rd, 2020. Hyper Scape moves away from the traditional battle royale game because there is no armor system, inventory, or weapon attachments. …

Let’s explore the possibilities

After an initial delay of Marvel’s Avengers, Square Enix has announced that the game will release on September 4, 2020. The game is intended to launch on current and next-generation consoles. Many details of the game were shown in the E3 2019 reveal trailer, but much more information has been released since then. For example, some of the story and the gameplay has been provided to the public.

Marvel’s Avengers takes place approximately five years after “Avengers day” in which many people died. Because the Avengers were blamed for this tragedy, the team had to reassemble to help save the world from chaos. In many trailers and official statements released, Spider-Man is not shown/mentioned at all. …

Destiny 2 Forsaken. Source: Bungie.

Video game developers are starting to use microtransactions in almost all types of games ranging from mobile farming simulators to fast-paced online FPS. Game developers such as Electronic Arts, Activision Blizzard, and Rockstar Games make in-game items cost money to help fund their company and games. How much does this affect the video game industry and the players?

Games such as Destiny 2 require players to spend real money on Silver, the in-game premium currency. Prices for Silver range from 4.99 USD to 49.99 USD; items such as emotes and loot boxes are available to purchase with Silver. At first, these virtual items were only cosmetic and did not interfere with the experience of the game. However, over time, additions such as loot boxes granted players an ability to get an edge over players who haven’t spent money on microtransactions. …

How the inclusion of Avatar: The Last Airbender characters in SMITE will act as a short in the arm for the popular MOBA

SMITE announced on June 22, 2020, that Avatar: The Last Airbender characters will be playable in their popular MOBA title. Characters such as Aang, Zuko, and Korra will be available within their new battle pass in sometime July 2020. SMITE currently has over 30 million active players, and a partnership with Nickelodeon will make fans of the highly-rated TV-show pleased. The timing of this reveal is just perfect because the show recently came to Netflix after broadcasting for the first time on Nickelodeon between the years 2005 and 2008.

Avatar: The Last Airbender had many games on both the PS2 and the Wii. Receiving low IGN and Metacritic scores all across the board, the games were not successful. Fans have wanted a current generation Avatar game since the release of the PS4 and Xbox One, but their requests weren’t answered by Nickelodeon. An RPG Avatar game with modern graphics and a vast open-world would be undoubtedly one of the most bought games of all time. While we wait for a next or current generation Avatar: The Last Airbender game, playing our favorite TV-show characters in SMITE will enjoyable by most. Using the various bending abilities against the other mythic gods will definitively be interesting to see. …

A brief overview of the pros and cons of each offering

The short answer is that it depends on which subscription and which online games you play. Each gaming company has its gaming subscription for online play. Sony has PlayStation Plus, Microsoft has Xbox Live Gold, and Nintendo has Nintendo Switch Online. Even though the prices are similar across the board — 60 USD for one year — each subscription has its own perks.

Before purchasing the gaming subscription on the gaming consoles, make sure you know which games require the membership in the first place. A common misconception is that all online games require the subscription to play.

Key advice to help you get started — and get better — with today’s most-played game genre

The battle royale genre has been continuing to grow rapidly since the release of PUBG in 2017. Some of these games include PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Fortnite Battle Royale, Apex Legends, Realm Royale, and Call of Duty: Warzone. Each game has different features, but typically battle royale games combine exploration, survival, and looting skills, with the end goal being simple — be the last one standing. As time goes by, the map gets smaller forcing players to fight each other in ever-closer quarters.

There are essential things you must learn and master to be successful in any battle royale game.

My first battle royale game was Fortnite Battle Royale back in 2017; I have been playing this genre since then and have picked up a few tips and tricks to help your gaming experience. When playing this genre for the first time, you will likely play for many hours without getting a single win because most of the time you have to go against many players with game experience. Skill doesn’t directly transfer, but once you learn how to play one battle royale — you will easily pick up on how to play another one. …
