How to write a story based on an existing media for a video game


Think of your theme

Before starting any story you need to think of what Genre you want to write. Might it be a Medieval Fantasy, Sci-fi, Adventure, Action, etc. Every type of story has some aspects of the narrative already implemented into it. Those aspects will be very important in the selection of the media that you will choose to be able to make it based around. As soon as you think of the genre, start thinking about the setting and be able to have a small image of what you want to make so that the media you chose to be able to inspire you coincides well with the genre and the setting.

There are several types of media to chose from to be able to make your story based out of. You can go to music, which in that one there are many types to chose from like compositions, OST from other games, Pop Music, Classical Orchestras, a lot of things that strike different ambiance. If you go for videos, in this choice of media you can go for Movieclips, GIF, Music Videos, Animated Series, or any Video in general that can inspire you. The other option is to go with an image that coincides close to perfection with the setting that you chose as that is also a good starting point for you to already have a visualization of what you want your audience experience. Once you have this media selected it can correlate to the mood that you want the story to tell.

Make your characters
Start making some baseline characters that you can carry out into your story to see how you are going to take them through the space and to see how you are going to be able to carry out them into the world that you have made an see how they are going to be able to go through it so you can get a general idea where you want them to start and what is the endpoint if you have decided one. At this point that you also have your genre and mood of the story start implementing that into the aesthetics of your character and to also find its personality on how its gonna act and its decisions in the story.

Think about how you are going to implement it into a game
Something that you need to start taking into consideration before starting to write the story is how are you gonna carry out it to a game as in games there are many genres of games to chose from with all of them having different ways to tell a story and how you want to tell your story in a game might it be through text, might it be through items in a game, or possibly make it a linear game that follows a route to be able to tell that story fluently. Depending on these factors you can start to develop what you are going to start to write so that later you can carry out it to the way you have chosen in the game.
Start telling your story
After you have all these factors you can start writing your first draft of the story. This draft does not have to be perfect by any means, the first draft is the first chapter on the way you want to start this story and the author should let all their ideas out into the paper before ever worrying over the fact that it needs to be concise and everything needs to be in grammatical order. Aside from all that, the implementation of already having a media that was chosen as your base can help you more fluently write the story and help you get less stuck on what you want to tell, enhancing the speed and the production value of what is being made and in the ned being possibly more entertaining.
