Disclaimer : This project is part of the UI/UX Training Program held by the Ministry of Communication and Information with Skilvul and Amartha as Challenge Partners. I am not employed or bound by a professional contract by Amartha.

Role in Team

We are a team with 3 members, we do the research and design thinking steps together. In designing the user interface, I focus more on the Home Page, Gold Detail Page and others. My other colleague Putri focuses on designing Buy and Sell Feature, and Atika designs the Game Page.

Why was there a need to re-design the existing app?

Amartha is a website and application-based platform that allows you to make loans, lend, save and invest. Simply put, Amartha is a P2P platform. Now they want to increase their business into gold investment. They hope by developing gold investment they can help users to improve their finances. However, investment services may be difficult to accept for some people. Therefore, Amartha wants to create a gold investment service wrapped in gamification to make it more attractive and fun when investing.

So, the goal of this re-design is

Develop attractive gold investment features to increase user interest in investing

How do we do the design?

Because the purpose of DTS program is implementing Design Thinking, we follow the step of Design Thinking :

1 — Emphatise

Unfotunately we didn’t do this step due to the deadline, so we go straight to the next step which is Define.

2 — Define

In this step we do 2 things to find user pain poins. First, we looked at comments from other gold investment app on playstore. We collect them and put them on the Figjam board

Second, we also conduct a brief competitor analysis : Pluang, Bibit and Tokopedia Emas.

Pluang

Pluang Homepage

Pluang offers a variety of investment products, including gold, mutual funds, stocks, and cryptocurrencies. Their homepage displays all investment products, making it easy for users to get to know their products. The pain poin we found at Pluang is every section of their products are not look like ‘clickable’, because they only divided by line. When we first explored the app, we were a little confused on what to click to open the investment detail page.

Bibit

Bibit Homepage

Bibit focus on mutual fund investments, they did great for displaying their products and this time it’s more clickable.

Tokopedia Emas

Tokopedia Emas Homepage

What we observed from Tokopedia Emas is almost every page has text that assures users that investing in this app is safe and secure. The features are also wrapped with interesting gamification so it seems less formal and more fun.

Now from our brief research, we summarize that we should :

3— Ideate

From HMW we try to find solutions :

Then make a priority diagaram to decide which idea should we develop

And do some fun on making crazy 8

4 — Prototype

Designing Interface

We change some part of Amartha homepage by taking out some sections and put it on other page

Take Out Some Sections From Homepage

After we take out some sections, we move some section from Marketplace Page to Homepage

Now that we have a bit picture of the homepage, we create the wireframe

Homepage Wireframe

We got some feedback from our mentor Mas Luthfan about our homepage, it looks like our gold section still looks unclickable and we also feel it is less visible than P2P. So we change our homepage design into this :

Note : We used Freepik for some of the icons and illustrations for this project

You can try our prototype here :

5— Test and Evaluation

To measure if our proposed design is the ideal solution, we set an interview with respondent who meet the criteria (age between 15–50 YO, an employee, familiar with app investment)

Research Objective

  1. Finding out user need and habit in online investing
  2. Observe how user explore the app
  3. Finding out the usability of buy, sell, and gold withdraw features

Interview Result

Based on our interview with our respondent, we find some feedback about our design :

  1. It’s better to put the gold section above the P2P so user can immediately recognize the new product
  2. After all transactions (buy/sell/withdraw) user should be directed to the portfolio page, so user know how much cash or gold they have after transaction
  3. Adding multiple payment/withdrawal method is much easier for users
  4. Game and voucher increase user interest in investing

SEQ Result

During the interview, we asked respondent to do some tasks :

  1. Login / Register
  2. Buy and sell gold
  3. Withdraw gold
  4. Try ‘Nabung Emas’ feature (auto buy gold for weekly/monthly)
  5. Playing gold game

Overall result on how difficult or easy respondent found on the tasks

SEQ Result (scale 1–7)

5 — Conclusion

Our design and flow aren’t perfect yet. There is still a lot of development that needs to be done to make this app perfect. By implementing Design Thinking in this challenge, it really help us on designing the product.

So this was the entire process of re-designing Amartha App. I hope you found this article insightful — Thank you 👋🏻
