Kefalonia, a true green island surrounded by the Ionian Sea’s clear blue waters; yet an island of mystery and strange phenomena. The sea waters fade out under Argostoli, the island’s capital, in the so-called Catabothres, and end in the atmospheric cave of Melissani, where the lake’s waters draw turquoise reflections on the cave’s walls.

The myth says that on the 15th of August every year harmless snakes go to Panagia Church in Markopoulo and St. Gerasimos, the island’s protector, sometimes awakes and visits the nearby islands. Although the catastrophic earthquake of 1953 that struck the island destroyed it almost entirely, Kefalonia revived from its ashes and became a major tourist attraction in Greece and the rest of the world without losing its authentic character. Most of the beaches are intact and offer enchanting scenery and a quiet atmosphere.

Beaches that will leave you with the best impressions!

Antisamos Beach: The Antisamos beach has crystal clear warm waters; The best part of it… It is embraced by hills and a forest.

Kaminia Beach: This is a wonderful sandy beach with a known pathway for it’s flowers.

Makris Gialos Beach : A beach for those who aren’t strong swimmers due to lack of waves.

Petani Beach: A wonderful blue flag beach…Evening swimming will be great, watching changing colors as the sun sets in the west!! Mind your steps, since you can easily hurt your feet if you are not aware of the small rocks.

Skala Beach: It might be the best beach in the island. Amazing scenery but don’t forget to bring footwear… Here is highly necessary!

Five things I would do again…

Visit the Venetian Castle named Agios Giorgos Kastro located near Argostoli!

Pass by the Folklore Museum located in Korgialenion. There you can learn and study locals art, folk culture and clothing.

Visit the Museum of Argostoli and discover what excavation of Melissani Cave brought to light.

Poseidon Temple is another must see place as it was devoted to Poseidon; the Greek God of the sea.

Last but not least is the Assos Castle; not in the best condition, yet hiding a great history and breathtaking view.
