When Ma’am announces last week that we are going to do in person resume drop I had a strange feeling that how I’m going to do that and had so many doubts but at the same time, I was excited and curious to know how is this going to end.

The company that I chose was Century Paper & Board Mills Limited, which is the part of Lakson group. Lakson group was established in 1954 and one of Pakistan’s leading business conglomerates. Century Paper was established in 1984 and is one of the flagship company of the Lakson group.

As the day of drop coming close, I got more and more nervous, the fear of unknown grown inside me. I researched the company and got the name of HR manager from their website. The day before the drop I prepared the resume and cover letter and put them in a brown envelope. Finally, the day of the drop has come, I woke up and felt excited and strange that what is going to happen. But after raising funds for Edhi Saab, I’m more confident than before and ready for any unexpectedness.

I reached the office of Century Paper Mills located at Kalma Underpass. The front of the building was tinted glass and there were no security guards outside the office. As I entered the door there was a desk right beside the entrance and there were two guards on duty. I asked them that I want to drop my resume, they asked me where you want to drop it, Century Paper Mills or Century Insurance, I told them I’m here to meet HR manager of Century Mills, they asked me to go to the reception. I went to the receptionist, I told him that I’m here to drop my resume, he gave me a warm smile and took the envelope from me, I asked him that is it possible to meet the HR manager I want to drop it in person, he said that you can drop it here, your resume will be handed over to HR. I insisted on meeting the HR manager, his warm smile and friendly behavior has gone, and there was hostility in the air. He told me that meeting with HR manager is not going to happen you can either drop it here or can send it via email. His name was Manzoor Ahmed, I politely left the building.

I was disappointed that I couldn’t make it to the HR manager but I’m also happy that I have come here and took a chance. It was overall good experience, I did something for the first time and it was not that bad for the first time. The biggest challenge is to prepare myself mentally that it is not the matter of life and death and even if do bad, I’m going to learn something and will do better next time. I learned that it is always better to take a chance and fail than never taking a chance out of fear of failure. One is only going to fail when he give up. Go out take a chance, get embarrassed, get humiliated, fail, come back, analyze, learn, and try again.
