I agree it’s a good feeling for writers to be part of a supportive community — it can be daunting to get started. I found having a few regular freelance jobs in the early days gave me the confidence that I’d be able to pay my rent, and I’m grateful to all the people who gave me a break when I was really inexperienced. It’s nice to be able to pass that on :-)
In my freshman year at college, I took a creative writing class. The instructor told us on the first day of class that he was going to need our help with deciding how to grade our efforts because “I have no idea how to assign a numerical value to a creative subject.”
I’ve been earning my living as a writer since I was in my teens. I paid my own way through university, bought property, made a life… I don’t understand this myth that you can’t “make money” as a writer at all! Consider buying this book if you want to continue in poetry writing. These were my best teachers (available for cheap used on amazon): “The Practice of Poetry: Writing Exercises From Poets Who Teach” by Robin Behn and Chase Twichell. Your poetry needs some shaping, but definitely follow it!
