For entrepreneurs, there’s the opportunity to build bona fide, elegant, innovative Facebook challengers for the first time in a decade. As individualist-consumerist society grows, expect to see a proliferation of niche-specific sites in the years ahead. (And, perhaps ironically, some sort of master-site to access them all from a single app.)

While Facebook’s deflation may take longer than others due to its massive size — and, like Myspace, it will certainly continue to exists for decades in some form — it’s safe to say that its best days are in the past. Because it’s only a matter of time before the network effect breaks down.

I had a close friend, married to her second husband when I met her. I later learned she’d cheated on her first husband with this man. It didn’t surprise me when she started to cheat on him with someone else. What took me by surprise was just how upset the second husband was. Karma takes no prisoners.

I tend to not bring up parents and relationships with parents for at least several dates. I discovered to avoid this kind of questionnaire very early on in life. In the seventh grade, I had a major crush on this girl. Ever the shy early-teen boy, I had absolutely no idea how to approach a girl or what to talk to her about. It’s something I’ve only slightly grown better at. For whatever reason, the two of us were talking and I asked about her mom. She said her mom had died at an early age. The conversation ended right there, as did any kind of confidence in talking to her further.

Animals are unable to acquire language even when presented with the same data as humans. There was a famous experiment in the 1960s where linguists attempted to teach a chimpanzee (named “Nim Chimpsky”) to learn sign language, but after 10 years he was still unable to communicate beyond a few rudimentary tasks.

The sound of something breaking. Shattering. You look down to find the thousand pieces of your heart. You want to reach down, pick it up. Reassemble it. But you can’t. Any attempt will leave you with new cuts. New sounds. So you just stare, heartless and empty, wondering.

Problem was she hadn’t actually broken things off with him. She wanted the intimacy not allotted to her with a distant boyfriend and yet didn’t want to break it off. I didn’t discover until months passed and she came clean.

By exposure to training data, modern deep learning neural networks sometimes have well beyond 10, 100, or even more layers — all learned automatically! The results are astonishing, blowing away years of traditional Machine Learning research on difficult problems!

View the field as a mathematical framework that allows us to learn representations and insights from data. It is a very promising area because it offers a lot of opportunities for automation, based on historical data, which could not be done before by using an algorithm.

For the public at large, spreading our digital interactions across a larger swath of sites could lead to better protection of our data, some inventive weapons in the fight against the foreign interference that undermines democracy and civil discourse, and a non-monopolized ecosystem of diverse platforms from which to express real truths without censorship.In traditional Machine Learning, this is a simple problem with an input (a picture) and output layer (cat or dog). Because it has a direct mapping from input to output, it basically predicts a function that separates all cats and dogs. Historically, Machine Learning did this very well by extracting characteristics (feature engineering) like the length of the cat, hair, color, etc. Instead of using the raw image, we used these features to predict the cat or dog. You can imagine, this is quite a task.Children acquire language too fast and from data that is too sparse for it to be explained by reinforcement learning (also known as the “Poverty of the Stimulus” argument).
I will declare from the outset that I am not a linguist, but in this section, I will try to give an overview of Universal Grammar theory. Before Chomsky, the predominant hypothesis in linguistics was that humans are born with minds that are “tabula rasa” (like a blank slate) and acquire language through reinforcement. That is, children hear their parents speak, they mimic the sounds that they hear and when they correctly use a word or structure a sentence they are praised. What Chomsky showed was that reinforcement is only part of the story and that there must be innate structures within the human brain that are universal and that facilitate language acquisition. Why is any of this important? You know that old saying, “like father like son”? Well, there’s truth in the saying. Children pick up a number of traits from their parents, including how to treat a significant other.

Deep Learning provided us with a way to do things differently. They introduced the concept of adding layers! By pushing the raw data through multiple layers, every layer extracts features. The first layer extracts some low-level patterns, while later layers extract more and more high-level features.

The following year, I made the same mistake, and the same answer came out. Even since that double-whammy, I’ve sworn off asking about parents. If someone wants to talk to me about my parents then I’ll proceed in kind, but until that happens I avoid parental talk.This article explained why it’s worth having a look at Deep Learning and move away from traditional Machine Learning methods, especially when you’re dealing with a lot of data.That’s not just from my own personal experience and from friendship relationship insights. It’s our presence and content creation that gives these platforms all their power and profit, and it’s time they start treating us more like customers and contributors and less like the product being sold.
When I first met my ex-wife she had been dating the same guy since high school. We attended the same college while he lived several hours away. We talked some the first year we met an obvious connection present. However, I didn’t want to push anything while she dated him. Not that I knew him or even knew what he looked like. A faceless barrier between me and her. So we spent time together, but nothing more.

After the summer break, she returned to college, announcing she’d broken up with him. Things progressed quickly from there. Barrier gone, we jumped right into a relationship both of us had known we wanted.

It’s easy for us to explain that a smarter person is more likely to win from a dumb person in a game of chess. Well, guess what. If a computer learns every path to victory, he’s likely to be the better person. Deep learning tries to remember every path to victory, allowing it to compete and even beat world-class players in games like chess and go.
