Here is a photo history of Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s department chiefs from 2013 to the present day.

2012, the year Mayor Buttigieg took office, is not included, as several department heads, i.e. Fire and Public Works, were held-over from the prior administration, serving for a few months on an interim basis until permanent hires were made.

The departments here are those listed on this City of South Bend website of “Departments and Divisions”. Each department head is listed in sequential order of employment in that position.

Not included here are the Departments of the Clerk’s Office and of the Common Council, as their leadership is elected by citizens, not appointed by the Mayor.

Photos are sourced from the City of South Bend, unless otherwise credited.

“It causes people who might not be on the inside but are on the outside looking in, to say why?…

You can’t live in a community that has a high population of minorities…and you don’t see any of those people up top.

[Our children] need to see people that look like them that are in different high profile positions in the communities in which they live in to give them something to inspire to be,”

-Lynn Coleman, retired SBPD officer, and South Bend’s first African-American Assistant Mayor, on under-representation in South Bend city government leadership.
