Truth to be told. I have never heard of Dale Carnegie’s books or training before. Until the time I was researching about Warren Buffett. It is widely known that Warren credited much of his success to his experience devoting to Carnegie’s writing (aside from Benjamin Graham’s The Intelligent Investors, of course).

In his book enticingly titled: “How to Win Friends & Influence People”, Dale Carnegie outlined the practical way on how to achieve that very purpose. Every principle he wrote seems utterly obvious, yet many of us failed to demonstrate a sufficient amount of understanding on the subject of human relationship.

One of his thought on the way to make a good impression, Dale Carnegie suggested the reader to smile. Yes, SMILE. How couldn’t it be more obvious? Yet we failed miserably on daily basis. I would be inclined to rave on but would suggest you to devour and judge the book for yourself.

Below is an excerpt from his book on the above-mentioned subject. It was based on New York department store advertising to its customers in recognition to Christmas pressure period to its staff.

It costs nothing, but creates much.

It enriches those who receive, without impoverishing those who give.

It happens in a flash and the memory of it sometimes lasts forever.

None are so rich they can get a long without it, and none are so poor but are richer for its benefits.

It creates happiness in the home, fosters good will in a business, and is the countersign of friends.

It is rest to the weary, daylight to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad, and Nature’s best antidote for trouble.

Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen, for it is something that is no earthly good to anybody till it is given away.

And if in the last-minute rush of Christmas buying some of our salespeople should be too tired to give you a smile, may we ask you to leave one of yours?

For nobody needs a smile so much as those who have none left to give!
