Eiichiro Oda reveals the basis of Crocodile ‘s grudge against Whitebeard in SBS volume 78.

Oda said that when Crocodile was still in his 20s, he had become a Shichibukai .

He then tried to challenge Whitebeard , but Whitebeard beat him to death at that time.
