It’s Not What You Know; It’s Your M.O.

I was always someone who said — “Oh, yes. I know that.” When people would declare certain ideas or insights that I took for granted as being basic fundamental truths, I responded with intellectual snobbery, like — Duh; obviously you have to work hard to achieve success, and obviously you have to work out consistently to get in shape, and obviously you have to have a positive attitude to have a positive life, and on and on and on. I responded that way not because I was de-valuing the significance or truth of those statements, but simply because I knew it. I had heard it before, many times. I had agreed with it and noted it in my head before, many times. I knew that already. Plain and simple. Tell me something I don’t know.
But, what I recently realized is that it is NOT enough to simply know something. There’s a very big difference between knowing something in your head and actually breathing it and sucking it in and implementing it and processing it and seeping it into your DNA, your subconscious, and your Modus Operandi so that it becomes an innate part of how your function regularly instinctively and subconsciously.
You can know something all day long, but unless you’re actively and consistently connecting with that thought and engaging it in your every day life; unless you’re eating, sleeping and breathing it — you will never execute on it or achieve whatever it is you want to achieve.
It is not enough to drink the Kool-Aid, you have to digest it. That’s the secret ingredient! That’s the difference between people that actually execute on and achieve their goals and people that just talk about it or think about it, and simply know it.
So while it’s great that you’ve taken that first step — acquiring knowledge (some people don’t even do that), it’s not enough. An idea, a belief, an insight, even a golden nugget of knowledge has no value if it remains dormant inside your head. You need to breathe life and action into that golden nugget in order for it to be effective and have any real meaning.
The only way to do that is to consciously, mindfully and effortfully consume yourself with that idea — talk about it, act upon it, reflect on it, nurture it every single day — until it becomes an integral part of your M.O. and not just something you know.
