Contract (2009)

I hear before I see

Given to music,
Lullabies lure me
Into seeing
If the presence has worth

Warranty to smell
Of Murphy’s oil soap
And lilac bushes
In bloom

Guarantee to taste
Like smoldering
Mango-honey cheesecake
And the deepest red wine

Insurance to feel
Like all the precious
Artifacts my mother
Told me not to touch
In the antique stores

Yet assure to willingly
Break all those treasures
And hear history
Come crashing down
