How to Create a Custom GPT?

A simple guide to creating your own version of ChatGPT.

Skip the hard work with my Custom GPT Toolkit:

Without wasting your time, let’s dive straight into it!

First Step

is to find the “Explore” button in the top right corner of the interface:

A custom GPT is basically your own super specialized conversation AI interface.

Once you hit “Create a GPT” you’ll be greeted with two chat windows side-by-side. The one on the left is for development. The one on the right is to test out your new GPT (as you develop it).

You develop your GPT by just having a conversation with the “GPT Builder” assistant. It will ask you what your goals are and what other information it can use to customize your GPT.

To further refine your GPT, you can toggle into the “Configure” tab. Here you can:

  • Edit the main “instructions”. Think of this like your main prompt that defines the goals and actions of this custom chatbot.
  • Edit the conversation starters for the chat interface.
  • Knowledge section: Upload files to train the chatbot on specific data.
  • Capabilites & Actions: You can even define rules for the chatbot to interact with other applications through APIs, such as Zapier integration.

When you’re ready, simply publish your custom GPT and then chat with it. It is now a ChatGPT version that is trained on the specific task you defined.

All in all this is a really intuitive experience that just works. The product team at OpenAI did a pretty amazing job with this.

Testing and Iteration

With “Marketing Mentor” created, I would test it by uploading relevant documents or asking marketing-related questions to see how it responds. • Depending on the results, I’d go back to the ‘Configure’ tab to make adjustments, continuously improving the chatbot’s performance. • So far, I’m satisfied with results that you can see below.

  • Adding an image: You can ask the GPT Builder to create an image for your GPT or you can upload your own under the Configure tab.
  • Additional Instructions: Here you can provide detailed instructions or guidelines on how the GPT should behave, its functionalities, and any particular behaviors to avoid.
  • Prompt Starters: These are examples of prompts for the user to start the conversation.
  • Knowledge: This allows you to provide additional context for your GPT to reference. Please note that content from the files that are uploaded could be included in the output.
  • New Capabilities: Enabling Web Browsing, DALL·E Image Generation, and Advanced Data Analysis, will allow the GPT to perform additional functionality.
  • Custom Actions: You can make third-party APIs available to your GPT by providing details about the endpoints, parameters, and a description about how the model should use it. Actions for GPTs can also be imported from an OpenAPI schema. So if you’ve already built a plugin, you will be able to use your existing plugin manifests to define actions for your GPT.
