Rian, thank you for another visually stunning and thought provoking post. Carl Van Vechten’s striking images and closeness to his subjects seem in direct conflict with his earlier book. Queen Latifah’s turn as Bessie Smith certainly voices what Harlem society felt at the time. Having just returned from Havana, Cuba and walking the streets of the inner city, snapping images myself, I’am very aware of your observation, “who is crafting the image, and why.” That said, thank goodness, someone, “hipster” or not, managed to capture these wonderful images for all to enjoy.
