This hit me squarely in the face a few years ago when I walked out of a recruiting fair at Berkeley, where students stood patiently in line taking turns pitching me on why they should be considered for a six-figure job out of school — only to be faced with an increasingly heated and potentially violent Black Lives Matter protest that truly sent chills up my spine — both since I could see and feel what I could not have ever sensed from a news clip, and article or post on a screen, but as I also realized that in my profession (recruiting highly sought-after engineers in the Bay Area) — I can’t say that I really ever have helped in their struggle or some might say I am perpetuating the problem.
