There is a piece I immediately thought of but can’t for the life of me find, on cargo cults and money fetishism. Gah. There are books out there, but I remember an article I read in college (high school?) on the subject of how introducing a cash and wages-for-labor system was a tool of colonial suppression, and how some economic concepts like compound interest were approached with a mythos that, for example, the money literally physically reproducing overnight. It’s driving me crazy that I can’t find it.

I bet it was college, for a religious studies course. Still, driving me bonkers that I can’t find it. Anyway, Border Fetishisms: Material Objects in Unstable Spaces is now on my list of to-reads.
