Godzilla-Tober: Destroy All Monsters (1968)

One thing I keep forgetting to mention is the scores by Akira Ifukube. Of course, this theme is iconic:

But his scores always give a sense of dread or menace, even during the more absurd moments in the series.

I mention his score first, because it was probably the best it has been in this film. Just a great complement to the action happening on screen, giving it a degree of seriousness and urgency, and just being a good listen on its own.

Really, it seems Honda, in his Godzilla movies, always emphasizes that kind of seriousness. It seems Honda had resented to some extent being pigeonholed as a director of genre movies, despite his preference and considerable talent for realistic dramas and comedies. Despite this, it never seems like Honda ever let that take away from the films. He always seems to take kaiju movies very seriously, and approached them with a great deal of his own personal touch.

That sense of seriousness always sets his films apart, it never feels as though the films are mocking themselves, but are always bringing…
