Godzilla-tober Mechagodzilla Halloween Double Feature Finale Spectacular!
Alright, Halloween night! Spooky! And we’ve reached the end of our look into the Godzilla films of the Showa era! Very excited to finally finish this up, let’s jump in:
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974)
Not a lot about this I can say that I didn’t also say about the last two.
Same very thing James Bond type plot and visuals, same “it does the same aliens bring a monster to Earth” plot. Even the same weird 60’s rock soundtrack by Masaru Sato, who apparently did the soundtrack for a lot of Akira Kurosawa movies, including Throne of Blood and Yojimbo? Which is odd to me because, in his Godzilla scores for Jun Fukuda, his soundtracks are very barebones, just kinda silly and not especially notable in comparison to Akira Ifukube. Maybe he just didn’t really put a lot of thought into it?
(Then again, from my recollection, Sato’s score for Yojimbo was pretty minimalist as well, but not with any goofy rock guitars or horns)
Anyway, despite only watching this film a few hours ago, I am struggling to remember it. I have to work to recall details of it.
Again, what really saves the film is the final battle, which is long and features a lot of good choreography.
King Caesar has a pretty cool design, and his moves were very entertaining to watch.
