I always thought being memorable in appearance was helpful, as long as you could back it up with a positive display of your abilities. It makes you easy to describe even without your name: “I was impressed with the guy with the long hair.”

Being attractive might not help as much, since it’s not appropriate to say “I can’t remember his name, but the gorgeous one!”
