Two things, I bet.

  1. Image — and the cachet that shoppers might be willing to spend more money/higher end items because of that image
  2. Competition with online retailers — if you have to compete with amazon, you’d better be providing a good online shopping experience. They can leverage their retail presence for people who prefer to pick up packages, as long as it’s not a painful process like waiting in the customer service line.
