Yeah, I was actually wondering if NYT was confusing the data with their anecdotal accounts as well. It’s easy to do — I was a bit unsure myself because of the insistence that the data is ‘percentage of people who hold credit card debt’ vs ‘dollars of debt per person’. I have a hard time extrapolating what that statistic means…

It could mean less credit cards, it could mean less using credit cards, it could mean more people paying off their credit cards and therefore more not having any at a particular point in time.

It would be nice if they linked to the data.
