The value of user-centred methods & feedback in visual design.

Adopting user-centred methodology in visual design and other fields can help attain better results in reaching a target audience. According to Bennett (2016), Designers fall short in delivering the purpose of their artefacts when they generally depend on their own intuition. On the other hand, when combined with user-centred methods alike in their design practice aids the Designer to discover a better way of reaching the viewers.

Depending on personal insight keeps a design subjective and may cause isolation from the intended audience but if research methods in design were associated, it provides a better way of understanding the users. (Bennett A., 2016). Several Designers disgust the notion of acquiring a response from their user discovering in the end process that their idea is unsuitable (Baldwin J., Roberts L., 2006). With proper research, we can tap into the user’s mind and understand further what the audience think to restrain the usage of improper ideas before presenting the design outcomes. If followed, Designers can become a medium, expressing a strong message to the audience because the collaborative ideas were approached in the designing process.

Designers have to devise methods for creating empathy with the viewers who will plat a part of constructing meaning from the message. This may mean gathering data directly from the audience for whom the message is designed.

(Bennett A., 2016, Design Studies: Theory and Research in Graphic Design).

Aside from users, another reason to value methodology design are the stakeholders behind your work. On the contrary, stakeholders have an aspiration and the user has needs that you need to correlate together to make the design favourable to both party. (Michaels Allen, P., 2016). That being said, Designers need to formulate an improved method of collecting data from the audience. (Bennett A., 2016). Utilising user-centred techniques may help you narrow down all variables that needed in designing the artefact.

In this manner, Designer’s intuition is insufficient information to rely on, One should immerse themselves in examining the audience and the context of the design. Encouraging designers in understanding the objective of the project, listening to the vast audience and applying practical user-centred methodology can improve the way we design things.
