What is nutrition coaching and why do I need it?

Nutrition coaching is about making small sustainable changes to your diet and lifestyle to improve your health and reach your goals. I will work with you to help you achieve these goals and ensure you have good nutrition.

But what is ‘good’ nutrition?

  • Good nutrition involves controlling energy balance. You get the right amount of energy (not too much or too little) to maintain a healthy weight.
  • Good nutrition involves caring and thinking about what you are eating.
  • Good nutrition focuses on the quality of what you are eating – focusing on eating whole, minimally processed foods.
  • Good nutrition helps eliminate food deficiencies, making sure your body has all of the nutrients it needs to make you feel good.
  • Good nutrition helps control appetite and food intake.
  • Good nutrition promotes regular exercise.

Nutrition coaching, however, isn’t just about nutrition. It’s about helping you change your behaviours and choices. If you stop and think for a second most people know what food is healthy, but what they struggle with, is knowing how to eat healthy, consistently. And who can blame them. Delicious food is all around us. This delicious food has been specially made to be super palatable and often one delicious treat leads to another and another and another…

Also we tend to be stressed and often turn to food to get a quick pick-me-up. After all, eating some delicious cheesecake after a hard day releases ‘feel-good’ hormones making us all fuzzy inside, at least initially. We tend to be super busy as well. Cooking takes time and we often don’t even sit down for our meals anymore. How many of us eat whilst sat at our desks answering emails or even chow down breakfast whilst driving to work? Quite often we don’t even taste our food or even think about what we’re eating. The deck can be stacked against us, but don’t fret this is where a coach comes in. I can help guide you through the journey of where you currently are, to where you want to be.

Through habit based coaching we will gradually change your nutritional habits so that you can consistently make choices that help you achieve good nutrition. And when it comes to success consistency is king. Knowledge and skill are great, but ultimately we are a product of our actions, not our knowledge or abilities. When we work together we will focus on action and what you need to do. Small, simple changes made over time will equal big results. And before you know it I can have you feeling and looking better.

So just how important is nutrition in the scheme of things? Surely by exercising I can achieve great things?

Well unfortunately exercise alone doesn’t cut it when it comes changing the shape of your body. In fact, adding a well structured nutritional program has been shown to improve results 10 fold over a 12 week period! 10 fold! That said, exercise IS also important and as I’ve said, any good nutrition program will support regular exercise.
