There used to be 4 billion American chestnut trees, but they all disappeared
Heather Gilligan

It’s not as important to the economy or future, but the butternut(white walnut) is also rapidly disappearing and there is no cure. It succumbs to a canker caused by a fungus that kills the tree. There is also a movement to bring back the American Elm from being decimated by Dutch Elm disease. Animals seem to get a lot of the attention for conservation, but I am a firm believer that trees are just as important, if not more.
