Letting Go & Going With the Flow Vinyasa Yoga Practice
The focus for this class is on letting go and going with the flow!
This week, a unique opportunity presented itself: hosting a yoga retreat that was already planned. No need to find people to attend or sort out logistics, I just had to show up for the week, be my ebullient self and a charming host, and teach.
You’d think that I would have jumped on this opportunity, with no (or few) questions asked. But I didn’t. I immediately started thinking up excuses for why I couldn’t do it.
It was too last minute. I had other commitments. I had too much work to do. I wasn’t prepared.
As I talked through each one of my excuses, I realized that they were just that — excuses.
I had already envisioned how my week would play out and I had attached to that expectation. My instinct wasn’t to go with the flow and seize this opportunity, it was to recoil and cling to what I already knew; to what was comfortable.
I did have other commitments for the week, but upon closer inspection, they were somewhat flexible; I could move some things around. I did have work to get done, but using my time wisely would allow me to do it. And the truth is, I was prepared.
I’ve taught in a retreat setting before, and I had been wanting to lead a retreat experience like this for a long time. As always, a number of things held me back. Mainly, finding the time and resources to plan such an event and market it effectively.
But here I was, presented with a retreat where the hard parts were taken care of, and I was still hesitating!
The reality is fear was holding me back. Fear of the unknown. Fear of discomfort. Fear of not being good enough. This fear made me rigid and inflexible.
My body is very flexible, thanks largely in part to my yoga practice. My mind is much more flexible than it used to be, but I’m clearly still working on this. I’m inviting you to do this work with me this week.
Letting Go and Going With the Flow
So I took apart my excuses and decided to let go. To go with the flow. Come what may.
And it was awesome.
I met lovely people, taught them some yoga and spent time with them, exploring this beautiful place I get to call home.
The week turned out great, which taught me that I’m prepared for more than I give myself credit for…if I can get past the fear and let go.
So in this class, I’m inviting you to do the same. Practice letting go and going with the flow here on your mat, and hopefully, this seeps off the mat and into your life, so that you can seize opportunities as they come your way.
