Break the cycle of procrastination and take control of your time with these actionable tips.

We may call ourselves out as a procrastinator but that’s not really the case. Rather you may just have a habit of doing what we all do which is put things off for feeble reasons which one can call procrastinating. Therefore this can become more of a habit than anything.

This however is good news, because habit’s, as you know can be broken with a little effort on your part.

A reality check here right now is to admit that anyone from any culture, any status, and any age, from the average Joe to people in all walks of life, has at one time or another delayed or rescheduled promises or goals.

In essence this is what procrastinating is, an act of postponement or delaying the effort or energy needed to put into tasks or responsibilities, but the fact is it’s often without a good reason. Unfortunately this can lead to feelings of guilt, shame, and frustration, and can have a negative impact on our desired output and productivity and can even harm our overall well-being.

I myself will attest to still feeling guilty to this day when I think back on my high school work ethic. If I were being honest, I would admit with recall that I probably only had a few decent years where I was studious and disciplined at school. But then there were the times that I needed the perfect environment and space to study and do schoolwork. I let things distract me on purpose, even and would convince myself that as soon as I finished enjoying this or that, I would head right back to the task.
But of course, that promise was hard to come by.
I felt I needed some kind of an urgency of all pending things to really light the flame and begin the task.
Sound familiar?

As I write I will confess that I’m still not as disciplined as I should be but I’ve definitely improved. Knowing that I was prone to procrastinating was key to fighting my way out of it.

So with that being said we should consider why people procrastinate.
Some common causes include perfectionism, fear of failure, lack of motivation, and an inability to manage time effectively. However, it is possible to overcome procrastination and start achieving your goals.

Here are some tips to help you get started:

  1. Break down what it is you are supposed to be doing or perhaps tasks into smaller pieces. Large, overwhelming tasks can be daunting, and it can be easy to put them off. Instead, break down your tasks into smaller, more manageable units. One step at a time attitude.
This will make it easier to focus on one task at a time and will help you stay motivated as you make progress.
  2. Set clear and realistic goals. Without clear and realistic goals, it can be difficult to stay motivated and focused. Take some time to think about what you want to achieve and then set specific, measurable goals that will help you get there. Make sure your goals are realistic and achievable within a specific timeframe.
  3. Prioritize your tasks. Not all tasks are created equal, and it’s important to prioritize the most important ones. Identify the tasks that are most important for you to achieve your goals, and make sure you tackle these first. This will help you stay focused and motivated, and will also ensure that you make progress towards your goals.
  4. Eliminate distractions. Distractions can be a major cause of procrastination, so it’s important to eliminate as many as possible. This may include turning off your phone, closing unnecessary tabs on your computer, and working in a quiet and comfortable environment.
  5. Get organized. Being organized can help you stay focused and motivated, and can also make it easier to manage your time. This may include creating a schedule, keeping a to-do list, and using a planner or calendar to stay on top of your tasks.
  6. Use a timer: Yes, any timer can be a great tool for overcoming procrastination.
Set a timer for a specific amount of time and focus on the task at hand. Once the timer goes off, take a short break, and then set the timer again. This will help you stay focused and motivated and will help you make progress on your tasks.
  7. Reward yourself: Acknowledge your progress and reward yourself for completing a task or reaching a goal. It will help you to stay motivated and keep going.
  8. Friction reward: Remind yourself that just starting the task will only be a short effort and that once you get going you might actually enjoy the process, the progress and the outcome.

Once the engine starts you may even enjoy the ride!

9. Lastly, have a cut off time. Set a time that you know that you will be able to stop and to conserve your energy and have the luxury of coming back tomorrow to do more.

If those tips aren’t enough then ask yourself this.
What person or persons has ever attained anything of value or accomplishment without putting in the hours, the practice, the time and the energy.

To me it’s often about what I will get out of the task at hand. I will stop and ponder the fact for example, if I don’t take the garbage out now I will have to rush and get it done at the last minute and if I do it now then I can sleep in that much longer. The reward comes into play.

The good old saying, “Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today.” It still holds. It’s a classic. It has gravitas. Use it or lose it.

Procrastination can be a difficult habit to break, but by following these tips, you can start to make progress towards your goals. Remember to be patient with yourself and to stay positive, as it takes time to change old habits. With practice and perseverance, you will be able to overcome procrastination and achieve your goals.

New Data suggests…

Learning not to procrastinate can help improve mental health and wellbeing.

Managing your environment and how you view tasks can help reduce anxiety and increase positive feelings. Evidence-based strategies such as reminding yourself why the task is important and valuable can help.

When you put something off, be kind to yourself and forgive yourself. This will disrupt the tendency and will help you break the cycle.

So go ahead and admit your discomfort without criticizing yourself.

You’re not the first person to put off doing something, and you certainly won’t be the last.
