drink (the architect)

still from our poetry short, banished — golem of ash and bone (2021)

yes, I poisoned the well
yet kept coming for a drink
only way I could tell
I wasn’t beyond the brink
it was why I first fell
and how I first saw the link
yes, I poisoned the well
and then came back for a drink

I was the architect
of both this tome and tower
done with the disrespect
done giving him my power
bitten tongues did bisect
saw them take root and flower
I was the architect
of both this tome and tower

yes, I poisoned the well
and kept coming for a drink
a story I could tell
not ever having to think
would always show and sell
so I’d not sever the link
yes, I poisoned the well
and then came back for a drink

I was the architect
of the shadow and the cross
the scribe of my regret
instigator of the loss
what little light I kept
it just kept getting turned off
I was the architect
of the shadow and the cross

yes, I poisoned the well
yet kept coming for a drink
it shaped the masks and shell
kept them all in line and sync
what kept me in this cell
doubling down on the link
yes, I poisoned the well
and then came back for a drink

I was the architect
of the scripture and sorrow
but I can redirect
and pen a new tomorrow
it’s not been written yet
need not be begged or borrowed
I was the architect
of the scripture and sorrow

yes, I poisoned the well
yet kept coming for a drink
only way I could tell
I wasn’t beyond the brink
it was why I first fell
and how I first saw the link
yes, I poisoned the well
needn’t any longer drink

I am the architect
of both this tome and tower
so I can course-correct
stop giving him my power
