what has been suffered

a poster still for our 50th short film, ART (2022)

“you must suffer for your art”
now they say that isn’t true
but I had long done my part
now my heart is black and blue

can I go back to the start
get its beat to be renewed
trace a brand new kind of arc
shape the arc into a mood?

and will this shadow depart
that which gives my voice its hue
for I suffered for my art
and my voice became imbued

what path is there from this dark
have there tread a storied few
if there is I will embark
before my journey concludes

perhaps it’s too deep a mark
to ever now be removed
’tis now the shade of my heart
how it shall always be viewed

“you must suffer for your art”
now they say that isn’t true
but I had long done my part
now my heart is black and blue
