Serving or having served gets someone a number of benefits. Being right about foreign policy by default isn’t included. As you are demonstrating here. In any negotiation, establishing boundaries is crucial. Diplomacy can be seen as one long negotiation. Your approach would leave the US in a weakened position to be diplomatic.
