Rob Chubb — How to Choose the Right AAU Basketball Team

Robb Chubb is a former three-year starter and two-year team captain for the Auburn University basketball team. He received a full athletic scholarship to play basketball at Auburn and graduated in 2013 with Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. Before attending Auburn, he was a standout high school player and played AAU basketball with some of the best in the Atlanta area. Here are three tips for choosing the right AAU basketball team.

  • The main reason that any young basketball player should play for an AAU team is to develop their skills and gain exposure. AAU teams do not practice as much as high school teams so, in terms of skill development, there is not much to be gained. However, AAU players can gain confidence and learn what it is like to play with teammates of similar skill. That is why it is important to choose an AAU team that gets exposure and attracts good players.
  • AAU basketball plays a huge role in player exposure. In fact, AAU has likely become more important in terms of exposure than high school basketball. Colleges have shorter recruiting periods so they tend to go to large AAU tournaments where are between four to seven games being played at a time. While AAU exposure is good, players should not expect to get scholarship offers out just their AAU play, they will also want to see high school play. So again, choose the team that gets a lot of exposure but be prepared to work hard in high school.
  • Lastly, choose a team where they offer enough playing time. AAU players should aim to be in the top 8 of the team’s rotation. AAU players who sit on the bench all game don’t gain anything from the AAU experience.
