The thing about any writing is that the story tends to be bigger than the writer; Shakespeare for instance. Character development doesn’t necessarily exist solely in the mind of the creator — how many interpretations of Hamlet exist?
No, no one can REALLY know and I think you mean “far-fetched” rather than “contrived”, which I can agree with (if I contrived them they would be overly-evident to the point of fakery).
But I would ask you to consider if it’s possibly more human. I think it is.
